NAGAFF 100% Compliance Team Members have been charged to ensure proper examination of containers are carried out by relevant government agencies before they are exited from the ports.
The Compliance Team was established in order to ensure that stakeholders in the Maritime Industry engages in the rules of the business as far as honest declarations of imports, accurate payment of Duties amongst others, in keeping with the rules governing International Trade.
Founder of NAGAFF, Dr. B O Aniebonam
The  Founder of National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), Dr. Boniface Aniebonam gave the advice during a thanksgiving ceremony organised by the members of NAGAFF 100% Compliance Team to mark the end of their successful working year, 2020 amidst circumstances and challenges  as well as Certificate presentation to trained members of Team
He stressed that if proper examination is done, cargos would not be intercepted or seized by the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) ,  the Comptroller General of Customs(CG) Strike Force, Standard Organisation of Nigeria(SON), National Agency for Food & Drug Administration Control(NAFDAC) or NDLEA(National Drug Law Enforcement Agency),  thereby safeguarding both the investments and businesses of their clients and freight forwarders.
In doing this, Dr. Aniebonam further urged them not to take laws into their hands in the cause of discharging their duties but to observe and send their reports to the Command Centre while the center will in turn send it to the appropriate quarters.
”Containers must be properly examined. If any container is not properly examined, don’t make noise, don’t foment any trouble. Pick up the information, send it to your Command Centre and they will send it the appropriate quarters. By doing so, you are doing your job. If we can do that for one month, then Containers cannot be carried by FOU or CG’s Strike Force. The Strike Force will practically cease to exist. But if we don’t, they will be there and we would be complaining when we are the ones causing the problem.
”The key things I have said now is that ‘Don’t take laws into your hand. See something, say something’. Our clients will no longer loose their goods. When proper examination is not carried out, those goods would be intercepted and ceased, our clients will lose their investments and we also will lose our businesses.
”Compliance is engaging in the rules of the business. What we are into now is a subtle Revolution which we are undergoing in Port operations. What we have set up now is for you to understand that we are tired of moving cargo in and out of the ports. Compliance Team is a Revolution.
”Compliance means that Bribe has to stop at port level. Compliance is a serious business. One of the major assignments of the President of this country is fighting corruption because corruption is soiling this country. The only thing you must understand is that, you must not take laws into your hands.” he opined.
The Nagaff Founder who is also the National Chairman of New Nigerian Peoples Party(NNPP), commended the National Coordinator of NAGAFF 100% Compliance Team, Alhaji Ibrahim Tanko for the good job he and his team are doing , however disclosed that, ”There is a damaging petition written against Tanko by one Mr John Offorbike to the Nigeria Customs. The meaning is that Compliance Team is working. If John can sit down and write that kind of petition that I saw against Tanko, it then reminds me of a petition written against me when I founded NAGAFF.  This petition written against Tanko, an innocent man, who for obvious reason have risen to add value, we cannot continue the way we are going.”
According to him, ‘We need to support the government. We need to get things working in this country.  President Buhari did not come down here at the port talking because he delegated his function under section 5 of the Nigerian Constitution from the Vice President down the line, so why are we talking?  So, the petition written against Tanko shows that the Compliance Team is working. That is the tonic Tanko required to continue to push forward. And that is why they say when you fight Corruption, Corruption will fight you.
”By next year, the Compliance Team should be properly managed having been properly educated and enlightened because your first assignment will be to get educated and trained because it is very important.
”And when you get into the Terminals, hold strategic meetings with the agencies of government, intimating them that the purpose of your being there is for the rules of engagement to be respected. For instance, proper Customs examination,” he added’
Some Compliance Team members
Dr. Aniebonam who noted that NAGAFF is a professional body under the control and Regulation of Council for the Regulation of |Freight Forwarding in Nigeria(CRFFN), therefore not into unionism used the opportunity to announce the expulsion of the Tin Can Chapter Secretary, Fwdr. Emeka Nwosu. However, the reason for his expulsion was not made known.
On the challenges of CRFFN, he said, ”We have worked hard to get CRFFN working. Don’t mind the problems we are going through. By the special grace of God, we will get it right and our profession will be an enviable one,” he reassured.
