The Founder of National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), Dr Boniface Aniebonam says for Journalists to excel and perform their statutory functions as watchdog of the society, they must be independent.

To realise this, there are certain steps the Union Executives need to take to enable their members carry out their reportorial and investigative duties creditably and unbiased.
Dr Aniebonam who made this known when he received in  audience the newly elected executive members of NUJ, Lagos State Council led by their Chairman, Mr. Leye’ Ajayi at NAGAFF headquarters in  Apapa – Lagos congratulated the Mr Ajayi for his emergence as the  chairman of the state Council and urged him  to use the opportunity to excel by putting in place those things he believes in , to reposition the Council and take it to a higher heights.
He remarked that Finance has an important role to play in their capacity,  production level and advised the Council executives to ensure to register business outfits in the interest of their members in order to assist them  perform their duties optimally and independently.
“Just as NAGAFF is a non governmental organization so is NUJ. There’s nothing wrong in you setting up  business outfits as NAGAFF has done by setting up an outfit known as Integrated Services Limited. The  outfit is a platform to reach out to some of NAGAFF friends in strategic positions. Money realised will be used in helping members who would in turn plough it back to  the Association.
“Use your connections to get something that would help you in your bid to salvage the nation through your investigative reports”, he added.
On the State of ports in Lagos, Dr Aniebonam said, ”there is a system collapse as the port has become non competitive, outrageous in terms of pricing and without good access roads,
“There is a system collapse on. So what has taken over is tactics. Systems collapse in the sense that there is a port reform. The essence of port reform is to increase productivity, to make the ports competitive and to save cost.  This is the reason why the Ports were concession.  NPA  was advised to provide technical assistance and supervision. The ports have become non competitive today. The reform makes no sense again.
“This is not the time to blame any particular organization, Nigeria Customs Service, Standard Organization, NAFDAC, NIMASA and others.  It just require the intervention of Mr. President in declaring  state of emergency . It’s like starting all over again to get it right.”
“The most unbelievable aspect of it is the level of corruption. It’s like ‘to your tent oh Israel’.. Whatever you want to do, you can go ahead and do it.”
The Founder of NAGAFF who is also the National Chairman of New Nigeria Peoples’ Party(NNPP) expressed worry over the avoidable seizures being made by Customs after its officers had examined and released the container, adding “we are not doing justice to the economy of this nation when we are seizing traded goods.”
In his remark, the National President of NAGAFF, Chief Increase Uche who congratulated the newly elected officials of Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) for their emergence, assured of the support of the Association to the success of their administration.
Chief Uche  however noted that alerts, gridlock, delays had defied every other step taken to make things work in the ports, adding that the ports are already moribund .
He said that before any other measure to have positive impact, the decay must be addressed, regretting that all the Reforms embarked on since 2002 have not had any positive impact.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of NUJ, Lagos State Council, Mr Leye Ajayi thanked the Founder and NAGAFF for the support given him in the countdown to the election.
He  praised Dr. Aniebonam for being a loud voice in the Maritime industry and the affairs of the nation adding that the Founder remains constant in his views, as well as being courageous.
